If you’ve got moss on your roof, that’s not good. It can mean damage to the shingles & other problems with your home. But if you’re wondering what to do, we’re here to help! Today, we’ll tell you about what moss on your roof means & the 6 easy steps to remove moss from your roof for good.
As a kid, I loved to play with moss because it was so spongy, green & inoffensive. Back then, I would think of moss as sod.
But things have changed. Now, I am a roofer. Consequently, my perception of moss has drastically altered.
Moss grows due to high humidity and shade, mainly from nearby trees. Moss is one of the most common roofing problems in South Carolina.
The innocent-looking moss can shorten the lifetime of your roof. Like a real-life version of hobbit houses from The Lord of the Rings, your roof might look beautiful. So cute.
But most can severely damage your shingles and other roofing materials. Moss is like a sponge that absorbs water and holds moisture longer.
The shingles won’t dry out; they will get saturated, and the moisture will rot the sheetings. And you don’t want that ever to happen.
Also, if you have moss on your roof, it collects water every time it rains and, in turn, weighs down your roof and affects its infrastructure.
Moss loves growing over roof shingles, tiles, and slates. So, if you have one of these roofing materials, you should know they are susceptible to moss growth.
How to Remove Moss from Roof:
Removing moss from your roof can be daunting. Professionals often remove moss on roofs, but you can do it if you’re willing to put in some effort.
When Is The Best Time Of Year To Remove Moss From The Roof?
You should do it during the fall rains and early spring months. It is during those months that Moss actively grows.
All roofing maintenance is risky for the average homeowner. You ought to be careful when you set foot over a ladder.
And one of those precautions is getting all your tools and safety gear ready.
Working on a roof is dangerous. So, your safety comes first.
First, you need to tie your safety rope into something sturdy enough to withstand your weight and something in the opposite direction of where you don’t want to fall.
Then, you should put your safety harness on and attach it to the safety rope. Now that you can’t fall, it is time to act.
You must lightly sweep off the roof with a stiff bristle broom and remove some moss.
Gently scrub back and forth and get after the oversized and loose pieces of moss. Then, you should clean the roof to eliminate the debris and moss.
Note: Some homeowners try to do this step with a power washer. But we don’t recommend it for two reasons. The first one is your safety. Over a wet roof, the probability of falling is higher. Second, if you don’t know how to set up the power washer, you could damage your roof shingles if the power washer is too strong.
Sure thing, most of these tips are temporary solutions. But you want a permanent solution to stop the moss growth.
So, you can install zinc-coated metal strips beneath the top ridge on both sides of the roof.
Zinc is toxic to moss and algae, and it is also an affordable solution. Look at this video at 2:15

You can purchase zinc-coated strips and cut them to fit the width of your roof. Then, using roofing nails, you can attach the strips on both sides of the ridge.
Prepare the bleach solution that will be your homemade roof moss killer.
You need to mix ⅓ of a gallon of bleach and 1 ½ gallons of water.
Now, put the moss-killer solution you just made into your pump-up sprayer.
Then, you will wet down the roof and make sure that you apply enough of the solution to every inch of the roof, especially those parts most affected by moss growth.
Killing the moss will take a few days, but this is a proven solution.
Moss and algae thrive in shady and humid spaces. These can grow to cover large portions of your roof.
So, if you have tree branches hanging over your roof, you better get those out of the way because they block the sunlight and help moisture to linger longer in the roof shingles.
Also, remember that removing tree branches can be dangerous. If, in your particular case, removing the branches is easy, you can do it.
But if you need to cut a big branch that is too high to reach, you should contact a tree service expert nearby to help you with this task.
